This is from my upcoming January release, Gambling On a Secret (for those who have followed me for a while, you know it as “Butterfly”).
One of my favorite unromantic relationships to write about is the relationship between siblings. And I won’t lie, it’s probably because my brother, who was younger than me by six years, and I were not close. He passed away last fall, rather tragically in a house fire, and I will always wish we could have been closer and could have had the kind of relationship I enjoy writing about.
The Colton Gamblers, of which Gambling On a Secret is book 1, have several siblings who star in this family saga type of series. Here’s a snippet from the end of Chapter 6, and is between the hero, Dylan Quinn and his younger sister Tracy…
The unfamiliar urge to smile at her exasperation tugged at his lips. Tracy peered at him for a moment before she crossed the small space and wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him close.
He’d been a bastard lately, and for the first time in months, he was sober long enough to realize it. Holding her close, he spoke into her long brown hair. “You be careful, sis.”
“I will.”
What kind of relationships, other than the romantic one, do you like to read/write about?

I’m sorry about your brother. I can relate to your wish that things had been different–I have two sisters, one of whom I’ve never been able to get along with either. I like the bit in your snippet about how he hasn’t been sober enough in months to be self-aware. And a lovely cover, BTW!

Writing a close sibling relationship like this is heart-warming. It makes me want to learn more about them and the fact he must have done some not-so-pleasant things in the past.

This is a great six. I recently lost my brother-in-law-to-be and know what you mean. To answer your question, I don’t know if it would still count as a romantic relationship if there used to be something there, but I love reading and writing scenes involving exes. The awkwardness can’t be beat.

That’s, Sharon… I love that line too because it says even more about how much he has changed since meeting the heroine.
That’s a nice moment – I’m hooked and I wish I had a bit more context to it.
I’ve never really thought about the kind of relationships I like writing. Close platonic friendships are always good – especially guy-guy best buds. 🙂
