Six Sentence Sunday

Happy Sunday! I’ve been away from Six Sentence Sunday for a little while. Check out the link for other wonderful writers…

This is from my upcoming January release, Gambling On a Secret (for those who have followed me for a while, you know it as “Butterfly”).

One of my favorite unromantic relationships to write about is the relationship between siblings. And I won’t lie, it’s probably because my brother, who was younger than me by six years, and I were not close. He passed away last fall, rather tragically in a house fire, and I will always wish we could have been closer and could have had the kind of relationship I enjoy writing about.

Have to show off my beautiful cover that I just received last night!

The Colton Gamblers, of which Gambling On a Secret is book 1, have several siblings who star in this family saga type of series. Here’s a snippet from the end of Chapter 6, and is between the hero, Dylan Quinn and his younger sister Tracy…

The unfamiliar urge to smile at her exasperation tugged at his lips. Tracy peered at him for a moment before she crossed the small space and wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him close.

He’d been a bastard lately, and for the first time in months, he was sober long enough to realize it. Holding her close, he spoke into her long brown hair. “You be careful, sis.”

“I will.”

What kind of relationships, other than the romantic one, do you like to read/write about?

I liked your six sentences, too. I’ve been trying to drum into my kids’ heads for years that they should cherish each other — not fight all the time. sigh.

    1. Thanks, Callie. I totally agree about cherishing each other.

Oh, how pretty. Valerie’s my cover artist for A Member of the Council and she gave me exactly what I’d imagined and more.

    1. Thanks, Lynn! Of what I’ve seen of her work it’s amazing. As I said to Piper when emailed her afterward I got it that it’s almost like she read the book. She captured my characters perfectly!!!

OMG, that snippet has hooked me completely. I love reading and watching how bro and sis react to one another. I’m so sorry about your brother but don’t let that stop you from talking to him anyway. Love the cover too!

    1. Thank you, Teresa…

  6. Maddy says:

I like to see glimpses of relationships with older people – I think they add depth and realism.

    1. I totally agree there. I love exploring relationships.. Friendship, especially between guys, is also one of my favorites.

  7. Very touching snippet! Love the background you wove in with only a few sentences.

    1. Thanks, Christine. This scene is one of my favorites.

  8. Jenna Jaxon says:

Sounds like they could have a close relationship if he’d work a little harder at it. Nice six.

    1. Actually they were very close, but his PTSD and drinking pushed her way.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Nice six. Brother/sister relationships can be touchy.

    1. Thanks! But they are fun to write.

  10. Very touching snippet. I’m sorry about your brother. So tragic.

    1. Thanks for visiting….

  11. Great snippet! Sorry about your brother, that is very tragic. I actually love brother sister ones, but because my brother and I are really close. One of the many reasons I loved the TV show Firefly was because of Simon and River…

    1. Thank you, Angela…

  12. Linda Morris (@LMorrisWriter) says:

I’m sorry about your brother. I can relate to your wish that things had been different–I have two sisters, one of whom I’ve never been able to get along with either. I like the bit in your snippet about how he hasn’t been sober enough in months to be self-aware. And a lovely cover, BTW!

    1. Thank you, Linda. Hope things get better with your sisters.

  13. aww, lovely snippet. Nice job!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Sandra…

  14. D'Ann Lindun says:

Great job, Sara! I love this scene.

    1. Aww… Thanks, D’Ann…

  15. Mae Clair says:

A lovely, touching six. I’m so sorry to hear about your brother. You have my sympathy.

Writing a close sibling relationship like this is heart-warming. It makes me want to learn more about them and the fact he must have done some not-so-pleasant things in the past.

    1. Thanks for coming by, Mae Clair….

  16. Lisa Rayns says:

    Sorry Sara. Great cover.

    1. Thanks, Lisa. I love the cover.

  17. This is a great six. I recently lost my brother-in-law-to-be and know what you mean. To answer your question, I don’t know if it would still count as a romantic relationship if there used to be something there, but I love reading and writing scenes involving exes. The awkwardness can’t be beat.

    1. Thanks for coming by, Samantha. I love the whole exes trope too. In fact it will make up the H/h relationships of most of the books in this series.

  18. Love this line–> He’d been a bastard lately, and for the first time in months, he was sober long enough to realize it.

    1. That’s, Sharon… I love that line too because it says even more about how much he has changed since meeting the heroine.

  19. That’s a nice moment – I’m hooked and I wish I had a bit more context to it.

I’ve never really thought about the kind of relationships I like writing. Close platonic friendships are always good – especially guy-guy best buds. 🙂

    1. Thanks! I’m glad you’re hooked…
