“Momma?”

They both froze at the softly spoken word. When she looked past his shoulder toward the door, Emily stood there peering at them with her mouth hanging slightly open, eyes wide.

Abby immediately untangled herself from him and tried to shove him away. “Seth is helping me with the horses.”

Seth and Emily gawked at her with nearly identical expressions of bemusement, and she shoved at him harder. He let her down, but positioned himself behind her and held her close. She glanced questioningly at him. He raised an eyebrow, grinned, and leaned in to whisper in her ear, “I don’t think you want me to move right now.” She closed her eyes and trembled at the low rumble of his voice. “I’m hard as a rock.”

“Oh. Don’t move,” she whispered and made sure she was directly in front of him.

Swallowing hard, she turned to face her daughter, feeling very much like a teenager caught by a parent. Who would have thought the same embarrassment could be inspired with the reversed situation?

He’s determined to set things right, no matter the cost.

The last person Abby Crawford wants to face down is country music superstar Seth Kendall. Last time she did, she flat-out lied so he’d go to Nashville without her. She’s never understood why their mutual best friend proposed, but she went with it so her baby wouldn’t be fatherless. Now she’s a divorced mother of a teenager, and secretly Seth’s biggest fan.

Seth is home in McAllister, Texas for his father’s funeral…and a chance to meet the daughter he’s never known. He’s willing to face the music of his own making and admit he’s known about his little girl all along. For fifteen years he’s kept his distance because Abby told him to follow his dreams without her, insisting she didn’t love him. But now he won’t leave until he knows his daughter and she knows him, even if it means facing the woman who broke his heart for good.

Confessing she’s lied about her daughter’s paternity all these years won’t be easy for Abby, especially with her ex blackmailing her to keep the secret. And Seth doesn’t know the hardest truth of all: Every love song he plays on his guitar still plucks her heartstrings.

Welcome to the April Showers Blog Hop!

What time is more romantic than spring? As the flowers bloom and the weather heats up, so does the romance in my contemporary western romances. Here are a few hot first kisses from my series, Colton Gamblers.

Gambling On A Secret, Colton Gamblers book 1

She let her gaze slip down over his work-toned body. His shoulders were broad, biceps muscular. The scars and tattoos gave him a dangerous edge she should run from, not eat up like eye candy.

As he pulled the shirt over his head, she reached out and skimmed her fingertips over the largest of the scars on his abdomen. Dylan shivered, yanked the shirt off before putting it completely on, and dropped it on the floor. He grabbed her wrist to pull her against him, and held her.

Her head spun, and her heart sputtered as his mouth lowered hard on hers. He licked at her upper lip, and she opened for him to plunge his tongue into the depths of her mouth.

His hands moved to her hips. Without breaking the kiss, he lifted her unto the edge of the sink. She wrapped her legs around him and crossed her ankles over his behind. When she pulled him as close as he could get with their clothing in the way, he groaned. She couldn’t get enough of him and pressed her center into his impressive erection. He held her there, and somewhere in the cosmic haze, she realized they were dangerously close to giving in to the raw desire sizzling between them.

Her hands moved between their bodies through the soft curls up his chest. His hands molded over her breasts under her tank top. A moan escaped her when he flicked his thumbs over her aroused, satin-covered nipples. She wanted to touch him everywhere and wanted to be touched everywhere by him.

With a growl deep in his chest, he broke the kiss and pulled back. She opened her eyes to meet his. Why was he pushing her away?

When Charli bets everything on a secret…

Former runaway-turned heiress Charli Monroe is hiding her sordid past and planning a future in Colton, Texas. Attending the local college for a degree in social work, she intends to raise cattle on her newly purchased ranch, which she plans to open as a home for troubled teens. Only a few glitches—the Victorian mansion is crumbling, the barn needs a roof, and her oilman neighbor wants more than friendship. When she meets Dylan Quinn, Charli is willing to take a chance on the town drunk to help her rebuild the rundown ranch.

Will she find the deck stacked against her?

Dylan has his demons, too. The former Special Forces commander can’t get past his ex-wife’s betrayal and the botched mission that left him with much more than a bad limp. Certain the greedy oilman next door to Charli wants much more than just her heart, Dylan’s even willing to stop drinking in order to protect her. When things get dangerous and secrets of the past are revealed, is he only looking out for his new employer, or is she the new start he so desperately needs?

Gambling On A Heart, Colton Gamblers book 2

As the lag in the conversation stretched uncomfortably, he twisted his hat in his hand, wishing he’d left it in the truck. She must have noticed his fidgeting and jumped away from the island. “I’m sorry. You can stow your hat in the closet through here. I really need to get a rack for the entry.” She led him into the mudroom and slid a door open. The coat closet was big and nearly empty. Reaching past her shoulder, he laid the old Stetson on a shelf. When she turned toward him, he brushed her breast with his upper arm, causing a flame to shoot through him.

Her thin sweater tightened over her pert breasts as she sucked in a deep breath, providing proof their proximity to each other affected her as powerfully as it did him. He pulled his gaze from her chest to lock with her eyes. They had darkened to a silvery blue, made more intense by the brilliant color of her top. Her breath hitched, and her eyes lowered to his lips. He knew what she wanted, because he wanted it even more.

Without thinking about exactly what he was doing, he lowered his lips to hers. His heart slammed into overdrive when she lifted her hands to his chest and moaned his name.

He wrapped his hand around her nape and tilted her face to allow him better access to her mouth. When he traced her upper lip with his tongue, she drew in a breath and opened her mouth under his. He took the invitation by thrusting his tongue deeply into the warm sweetness.

As their tongues dueled, she wrapped her arms around his neck, bringing her body in full contact with his. She sucked on his tongue when he pressed his hard-on into her lower belly. Sweet mercy, he wanted to strip her right here and have his way with her on the cold tile floor of her mudroom. Damn the danger to his pride and self-respect.

And damn the alarm warning him to be careful.

But he couldn’t forget their kids were upstairs. Somehow, somewhere, he found the control to back off and eventually break the kiss. Tracy opened her eyes and peered at him, dazed. She blinked a few times as he ran the back of his fingers over her cheek. He couldn’t hold in the raspy laugh.

“What’s funny?”

“You had that exact same expression on your face the very first time I kissed you.” His voice seemed to come from his toes as he remembered their first kiss. He’d had no idea how innocent she was until that night. How could she still have that virginal look of awe?

Her cheeks turned a darker pink and embarrassment replaced the wonder, making her appear even more naive. “Is that a good thing?”
He continued to caress her cheek. “I don’t know.”

She once lost his heart on a bluff.

Beautician Tracy Quinn spends her days making the women of Colton, Texas beautiful, while living down the nickname of Olive Oyl, given to her by the only man she has ever loved–Zack Cartwright. She spends her nights alone, despite what her ex husband wants their friends and neighbors to think.

Will she risk everything to win it back?

Ex-rodeo cowboy. Ex-bad-boy. Ex-Marine. Widower and single dad Sheriff Zack Cartwright can describe his life in exes. One ex in particular reminds him of what’s missing in his workaholic life: Tracy Quinn. For years since she broke his heart, he’s practically made avoiding her a second job. He still wants her, but can never go after her. When cattle rustlers target her brother’s ranch, Tracy and Zack are stuck working together. Her son could use a positive male role model, and his daughter is wild for a chance at a “substitute” mom. But Tracy’s ex threatens to sue if she lets Zack near her son, and the Colton grapevine is abuzz with rumors about their past relationship. Is it worth the gamble to see if what they have is more than lust?

Gambling On A Dream, Colton Gamblers book 3

“Stop it, Taco. Go lay down.” Dawn pointed to the dog bed on the floor in the corner beside a bookshelf loaded with James Patterson and Clive Cussler novels. The dog gave one more disapproving bark and waddled over to the bed, circled around the soft fleece inside, then settled. “Sorry about that.”

He patted his hand against his thigh. “No problem. She’s just looking out for her mistress. Who knows, I could be a bad guy.”
Snorting, she headed into the kitchen.

“What?” He followed and came to a stop behind her in the tiny space. “You don’t agree?”

From a cabinet, she pulled down two bright red bowls and set them on the counter beside a Crockpot. Turning, she took a deep breath.
Only inches separated them, and her scent surrounded him. Her eyes dilated and heated his blood. He was lost. The ache in his cock shorted out his good sense, and he reached for her. She didn’t fight as she stepped into his arms, tilting her head back. With a swipe of her pink tongue, she moistened her lips. “I know you’re a bad boy.”

The husky words were like a mean sucker punch in the gut. He had to have her. Pulling her closer and backing her up to the edge of the counter, he pressed the evidence of his desire against her. A soft moan escaped her moist lips as he lifted her to settle his cock into the cradle of her hips, and she rubbed her thigh against his. He wasn’t sure if he damned the clothing between them or was thankful for the barrier.

He came down hard on her pliable lips, demanding to be fed. She resisted his entry for a moment, but then relaxed into him and opened her mouth under his. As he buried his fingers into her hair and held her to him, he plunged in, needing to conquer her. She tasted of sweet mint, coffee, and the nirvana of a woman’s desire.

Gripping the shirt over his chest, she moaned her surrender. But she demanded as much from him. As she slid her tongue against his, her body moved with each stroke against him.

He grabbed the bottom of her sweater and slipped his hand under to find the satin of her bra. Her breast was hot and heavy beneath the cloth. When he rolled his thumb over her nipple, it puckered instantly. She gasped and her hands flattened on his chest, trapped between their bodies.

Breaking the kiss, he nibbled his way along her jaw to her ear. “I want you,” he rasped between nips on her earlobe.

She shuddered and her breathing came in sharp, short spurts as she tilted her head, allowing him better access to the sweet spot under her ear. As he breathed in the musky scent of her desire, he sucked in her skin. Her salty-sweetness intoxicated him.

He took her moaning his name as his cue and flicked open the front clasp of her bra. As he reached for the bottom of her sweater, she shook her head and pushed on his chest.

“Wyatt.” This time his name came as a strangled pant. “Stop.”

Somehow, he found the sanity to back off. He looked into her eyes and the burn of her desire drained away, out-right fear replaced it.

She shook her head again as if to clear a fog from it, slipped away from him and entered the living room. As if she fought to catch her breath, she heaved her shoulders up and down. Hugging herself, she faced away from him. “I can’t do this. Not again.”

He ran his hand over his face. Goddamn, was he a total idiot? Was he that hard up? Having Dawn again would be like taking a hot knife in the gut and giving it a good twist. “I should go.”

  ~*~*~*~*~*~

Besides gardening, I enjoy cooking. This year I’m going to share two recipes that I hope you all enjoy…

This first recipe is a combination of about three that I found on Allreipes.com.  As with most recipes from there, I read several before picking one, and usually I read the comments to see what others did to change the original. One of my favorite soups is Corn Chowder. But I’ve never made it, until I decided to make it for a soup sale the social committee was sponsoring at work.  So, I searched for a recipe, or rather several, that sounded good, and picked and chose what I liked from them, then combined those things and added a few things of my own into a brand new recipe. This is what I came up with.

.
Corn Chowder with Bacon and Ham

INGREDIENTS:

6 slices of bacon, chopped

1 onion, chopped

¾ cup water

2 potatoes, chopped

2 stocks of celery, chopped

2 carrots, chopped

2 (14.75 oz) cans cream style corn

2 (15.25 oz) can whole kernel corn with liquid of 1 can

1 cup ham cubes

½ teaspoon salt

ground black pepper to taste

1 to 2 teaspoons ham flavored soup base

2 tablespoons flour

1 can evaporated milk

½ cup half-and-half

1 teaspoon parsley

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Fry chopped bacon until crisp in a Dutch oven or stockpot. Remove bacon from drippings and set aside.
  2. Add chopped onion to bacon drippings and sauté until tender. Add water, potatoes, celery, and carrots. Cover and simmer until tender, 15-20 minutes.
  3. Stir in canned corn (both cream style and whole kernel), salt, pepper, soup base, and ham cubes. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently.
  4. Reduce heat until no longer boiling and let simmer just under a boil for five minutes.
  5. Whisk flour into half-and-half. Stir both evaporated milk and half-and-half mixture into soup, let simmer just under a boil for five minutes, or until soup thickens.
  6. Stir in parsley and bacon crumbles to serve.

Oh, and it was a best seller at the soup sale.

 ~*~*~*~*~*~

This next recipe was passed down to me from my mom, and it in turn had been passed down to her. This is my family’s favorite cheesecake, and a tradition for Christmas, Easter, and even other special occasions. Once, I made this for a baby shower and decorated it with edible flowers. It has the look and texture of a soufflé and a mild creamy flavor. It is delicious with either canned or fresh fruit, and homemade whipped cream. Definitely a desert for angels…

.

Cheesecake

Preheat oven to 325 degrees

Mix together:

20-25 Graham crackers crushed or 1 box of Graham cracker crumbs

¼ to ½ pound of salted butter softened

3 tablespoons powdered sugar

Press onto the bottom and sides of 9 inch spring form pan, set aside.

Cream together:

2 large packages of cream cheese (8 ounce each)—I’ve used ⅓ less fat cream cheese with success, but fat free does not work.

½ cup sugar

2 tablespoons flour

Separate 4 eggs, beat yolks into cream mixture one at a time.

Beat in 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 cup Half-and-Half.

Beat egg whites until stiff and fold (do not over mix) into mixture.

Pour into crust, back 60-70 minutes. With oven door open, leave cake in oven 1 half hour after baking to cool.

Remove spring form pan while cake is still warm to touch.

Top with canned pie filling or fresh fruit and garnish with whipped topping or whipped cream

Whipped Cream:

Freeze bowl and beaters for at least 2 hours before beginning.

1 cup of heavy whipping cream

Beat on medium speed for 30 seconds, then add 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar. Beat on medium speed until stiff. When cream begins to thicken, reduce speed and watch that cream does not turn to butter. When topping begins to appear shinny, stop beating. The toping is ready and it is thick enough to be piped through a pastry bag (if desired) and held overnight.

(Photos only used for presentation. Although, my corn chowder did look a lot like the one pictured, I couldn’t find a cheesecake picture that looked like my mom’s cheesecake.)

What’s better than fresh strawberries? I was looking for some ideas of how I could do a strawberry garden without taking up a ton of space, and of course, I checked out the greatest place for ideas–Pinterest.  I always find tons of great garden ideas there. Here are some of the Pins showing space-saving strawberry gardens that I’ve pinned to my own board. (which can be found HERE). Now, I don’t know which one I like best…

Growing strawberries in rain gutters hanging about 6 feet off the ground is a great idea if you have the extra room.

Maybe build the  them around the outside of your deck.

Sure would make for easy picking!

I love this idea!  This is a 55 gallon drum (barrel) with holes for the strawberries. You probably could plant something like Top Hat Blueberries around the top for the starters for a great fruit salad. Yum!

Do you have an old shoe rack that you have no idea what to do with? Why not make a garden out of it!!

This neat idea shows herbs (which you could do too!), but another pin mentioned using one of these for strawberries, which is a great idea.

These next ideas are probably for other plants, but I don’t see why they couldn’t be used for strawberries…

Snakes in the Garden
I love spring, especially working in the garden, but occasionally I run into unwanted visitors.  Here in Pennsylvania garter snakes are common and I HATE when I find one.  In my contemporary western romance Gambling On A Secret, Charli doesn’t have garter snakes in her garden, but water snakes and possibly a two-legged  one as well….

She paused in her pruning and wiped at her damp eyes with the back of her bare arm again, shuddering at the old Gambling On A Secret, Sara Walter Ellwood, contemporary western romance, romantic suspense, cowboy romance, Texas romance, small town romancememory. Why had he treated her so bad? Why had Momma died? The answers didn’t come to her now any easier than they had nine years ago.

The sudden sound of a vehicle in the drive drew her back to the present. She lowered the pruning shears as Dylan Quinn stopped by the gate. He climbed out of the pickup and headed in her direction with a distinctive limp.

Shielding her eyes with a gloved hand, she smiled. “Hi. You’re here. Good.”

He stopped under the cherry tree and took in the entire yard with one sweeping glance. His inspection also included her, and something fluttered in her belly. “My sister told me you wanted to see me.”

“Yes. You’re hired, and I’d like you to start today.” She pointed behind her. “There’s a snake in the lake over there. It couldn’t be too far from the edge. I want you to kill it. Then I’ll show you around.”

His lips twitched in a ghost of a smirk. “It was probably a little blotched or broad-banded water snake. They’re harmless and common.”

Little? The thing was a good four feet long. And no snake is harmless.” When the meaning of the rest sank in, she shivered as the blood drained out of her face. “Common?”

“Yep.” He pushed back his dark brown Stetson, revealing some of his similarly colored short hair. “Water snakes are very common in this part of Texas. When I was a kid, I’d catch them from here and let them loose over on my granddad’s place to torment his wife.” His eyes twinkled at the memory. “Jock loved to watch me. You sure it was four feet long?”

She glanced at the lake again. “I don’t know. Maybe it wasn’t that long. Just kill it.”

He shook his head, and his lips twitched further into a genuine lopsided grin. Who cared if he was making fun of her? The guy was gorgeous when he smiled. The hard angles and planes still provided structure, but now small crinkles added life to his silvery eyes, and a small dimple formed in his left cheek. The flutter in her stomach his assessment of her had started just got worse.

“No. Unless it’s a cottonmouth.” He picked up a hoe from where she’d dropped it. “I’ll show you how harmless the water snakes are.”

He went to the edge of the water and prodded around in the overgrowth of cattails by the limestone lip.

She jumped when he pulled the snake out of the water. It twisted around the end of the hoe.

He looked over his shoulder at her. “This little guy’s a blotched water snake. I’m not killing it. Or any of his buddies in here either.”

“It’s a damned snake! Get rid of it. Now!” Dear Lord, was the man nuts?

He chuckled, the sound more than a little rusty as it drifted to her across the yard. “You aren’t really afraid of this fella, are you? This guy’s as harmless as a frog.” He shook the snake off the hoe and probed around in the water for a few feet. Turning, he headed back toward her through the high grass and weeds. For a guy with a limp, he moved fast.

“Maybe it is as harmless as a frog, but I don’t like them much either.” When he stopped at the edge of the garden, she backed up a step, and her feet tangled in the vegetation. With an ompff, she landed on her backside in the middle of a clump of weeds, bluebonnets and, amazingly, yellow daffodils.

He laughed and held his hand out to her, which she ignored. With a shrug, he hooked his thumbs into the pockets of his jeans. “When I was on a mission in the South American jungle, pythons the length of my pickup would come into camp. We didn’t have to worry unless we woke up in the morning with our feet in the mouth of one.”

She widened her eyes. Was he serious?

He snorted and shifted his stance. “Of course that was better than our heads being swallowed first.”

“Oh… Oh!” She struggled to her feet and brushed at her jeans. “If you aren’t careful, you’ll be fired before you even get started. I want that snake and any of his ‘buddies’ removed from my lake.”

“I’m not killing the snake.” He put his hands on his narrow hips, drawing her gaze to the way his jeans fit powerfully built legs. “If it was a cottonmouth, I would, but the water snakes keep down the populations of more unsavory critters like mice and rats.”

“My, my, if this isn’t a scene right out of the Bible.” A smooth voice drawled from the opposite side of the flowerbed by the gate.

They turned to Leon Ferguson standing on the stone walk. She hadn’t heard him drive up the driveway, and considering the thin line Dylan’s mouth formed, he hadn’t heard him either.

Leon had his hands in the pants pockets of his dark gray designer suit. His white Stetson cast his brown eyes in shadow.

“Ferguson, what are you doing here?” Dylan barked.

Leon ambled toward them on the stone path. “I’m saving a young maiden from torment. What are you doing here, playing the part of the devil?”

“I’m Miss Monroe’s new manager.” The deadly edge of his voice matched the flintiness of his eyes. “If there’s anyone to save the young maiden from, it’s you.”

“Mr. Quinn, please.” She turned to Leon. “Leon, is there something I can do for you?”

He smiled, showing off perfect white teeth in a face handsome enough to belong to an actor. “I was just passing by on my way home and decided to stop. How are the boys working out?”

Dylan’s stance widened and his hands flexed at his slides. “What boys?”

“Charli and I have entered into a business arrangement.”

She lost the battle with the urge to wrap her arms around herself. As much as she appreciated Leon’s kindness, respected him, and was even a little attracted to him, something about him didn’t sit right with her. He represented her peers in the community. According to Mrs. Pratt, besides the Cartwrights, she and Leon were undoubtedly the wealthiest residents in the county. No one in Colton could learn about her past. It would ruin her, and Leon, no doubt, had the means to dig up the dirt.

“Really?” Dylan stepped closer to her in a protective manner. Whiskey tainted his breath as the warmth of the exhalations tickled her cheek. “What kind of business arrangement?”

She could protect herself. Dylan Quinn wasn’t any safer than Leon Ferguson. Stepping away from him, she forced her arms to her sides. “Mr. Quinn, I can handle this.”

She faced Leon. “I’m amazed by how much the men got done since starting on Monday. The foreman told me last evening they’d be reseeding another fifty acres for hay this morning. And they have the corrals fixed and started on the fencing in the north pasture.”

“Good, good.” He glanced at Dylan. “I’ll be going, unless you need a more reliable exterminator. I couldn’t help but overhear about your snake infestation. I can give you the name of the company that has gotten rid of the snakes in our lakes over on Oak Springs for years.”

Although he presented the perfect solution, she didn’t the like way Leon had looked at Dylan as he said the word exterminator. “No, Mr. Quinn is quite capable of getting rid of the snake.”

“Oh, I’m sure he is.” Leon tipped his hat. “Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you, Charli.” Dylan’s jaw tightened as his uncle glanced at him. “It’s good to see you up among the living again.”

Leon headed back to his Porsche. With no pretense of lowering his voice, Dylan said, “Now, there’s a snake no one wants in their garden.”

Upon hearing the jibe, Leon’s shoulders jerked in mid-stride.

Rattled by Leon’s attention and the snake fiasco, she turned on Dylan. “You aren’t off the hook. I want those snakes gone.”

“We’ll see.”

“I hate snakes.” She shuddered and put her hands on her hips. “Maybe I should have asked him who the exterminator is.”

I am  starting to really LOVE Pinterest. I’ve belonged to the site for a while now, but just recently started looking at the different stuff that site has. And I’m loving the gardening pins!

Here are a few ideas that I’ve found and pinned to my own board. (which can be found HERE).

Reuse water that you have boiled your eggs in. This water contains tons of calcium that your plants will love. Just let the water cool and dump it on your plants. You can also use the egg shells, rinse them out real well, smash them up, then mix them with dirt and/or potting soil before planting any plants, or use in a compost pile. (Tip copied from PINTEREST)

I personally would never have thought of doing this!!! Even though I know egg shells are fantastic garden additives.

Use pine cones in the bottom of a pot – makes them much lighter, better draining. (Tip copied from PINTEREST)

THIS I am definitely going to try!  I always use small stones that I’ve found in the garden or broken pottery. The only disadvantage I can see with the pine cones would be the potential oils and sap they could put into the soil, making it very acidic.

Springtime in the Country Blog Hop–My Country Springtime Memories

Blog Hop, Colorado romance, contemporary western romance, country living, cowboys, historical western romance, Montana romance, romantic suspense, sheriffs, springtime, Springtime in the Country, Texas romance

.

Welcome to the Springtime in the Country Blog Hop!

With most of the country just staring to melt out from under an arctic winter… I decided it’s time to start thinking SPRING!

So… Cowboy lovers, what is your favorite springtime pleasure? Is it frolicking in the bluebells with your lover? Or is it rolling in the fresh hay with that cowboy after a long ride over the countryside? You tell me, because without a doubt there’s nothing like springtime in the country…

.

My Country Springtime Memories

I LOVE Spring. It’s my favorite season and in my contemporary western romance Gambling On A Secret, I really got the chance to explore what goes on during the spring on a working ranch.

Spring is the season when crops are planted—corn, soybean, and even hay (such as alfalfa and some grasses can be planted in the early spring). This is also the time of year most horses foal and cows calve. If a farmer or rancher buys caves, they do so in the spring. Fences are also mended in the spring. I used all of these elements in Gambling On A Secret to give it a “real” feel.

Charli buys a ranch that had not been worked for five years. She has to start from the ground up if she wants this place to be a working and productive ranch. I show her doing these things—with the help of her ruggedly handsome, ex-Special Forces Commander ranch manager.

When I wrote Gambling On A Secret, I drew on my memories of what springtime was like when I was a kid. I grew up on a farm. It wasn’t a ranch nor was it even in the West—unless you can count West Central Pennsylvania as the west. >grin< But some things are the same no matter what part of the US you are in. Growing up, spring was a time of constant activity. We didn’t have horses (much to my ever eternal disappointment), but we did have cows. My grandma raised Herefords and black Angus. She’d breed the cows in the summer and the calves would be born sometime between late February to early April.

We also raised chickens—both for meat and for eggs for our families (mine, Grandma and my aunt’s) to eat and to sell. Every April Grandma would get a hundred or so peeps. She’d keep them in a big wooden box on her built-in porch where she could keep them warm for about 2 weeks. Then once they started to get their wing and tail feathers, she’d put them in a coop. We also had ducks—I’ll never forget the one that thought I was his momma and followed me around from the day I helped him out of his shell in April to late summer when he decided to go on his own. Or the big ole tom turkey that liked to boss the chickens and ducks around at feeding time and was my best friend when I was little. Who needs dogs and cats when they have a turkey?

But the animals, wasn’t the only thing we raised. We also ran a small truck farm so this was the season of planting. Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, several kinds of beans and cucumbers made up most of our crops. There was always an excitement in the air as mid-May rolled around and planting time began. The harvests we shared among ourselves (my mom, Grandma and my aunt) for canning and freezing and sold what we didn’t use.

These are my treasured memories of Spingtime in the Country… What do you love about the springtime whether it’s in the country or not?

Ever wonder what it is about cowboys that makes a girl’s heart beat faster?

There are tons of things, but here are my top five and the ones I try to incorporate in my cowboys.

1.      Cowboys ooze masculinity.

From Heartstrings:

She ran her hand over the chipped white paint of the banister.

“Remember when you, Mike and I painted this old thing?”Sara Walter Ellwood, ccontemporary western romance, cowboy romance, Texas romance, Native American romance, country music singer romance

At the sound of the deep voice, she spun, her hand going over her heart. Seth stood up

from the swing hanging from the rafters on the other side. “Seth…”

She sucked in a breath and it caught in her throat. Time had changed him, but it had also made him even more devastatingly handsome. The dark tailored pants showed off his long legs and above-average height. The white dress shirt fit like a custom glove, outlining his broad shoulders. He’d lost the power tie he’d worn to the funeral. The top two buttons of his shirt lay open, and he’d rolled the sleeves to his elbows, showing off powerful forearms.

His coppery-blond hair curled over his collar and fell over his high forehead. A trimmed ginger-colored goatee hid the scar on his chin from a riding accident. The green ice of his eyes captured her gaze and made her heart race.

He gestured toward the pasture with a tall glass of what looked and smelled like whiskey. “I saw you and Mike. So, what happened? I thought you two would be together forever.”

She shrugged and turned away from him as he took a long sip from the glass. “I don’t see how that’s any of your damned business.”

A board in the floor creaked as he approached. She looked over her shoulder. He was so close. Her heart stuttered over a beat or two and something warm curled in her belly. How could he still affect her after everything he’d done to her?

He smiled, but it never reached his eyes. They remained two stormy seas ready to devour her in their relentless waves. “Oh, but I think it is very much my business. I want to see my daughter, Abigail.”

“You lost that right when you drove away that night.” She fisted her hands and faced him. “You lost that right when you let another man take your place in her life.”

He narrowed his eyes and leaned closer. His breath reeked from the whiskey. She wrinkled her nose at the painful memories of her father’s addiction to alcohol as much as from the stench.

“You know why I had to leave. It was my one and only chance. Goddamn it, you didn’t give me any other option.”

She snorted and squared her shoulders. “You had fame and fortune to chase. I’m glad you achieved your dreams. But it came with a price.”

“I told you I’d be back. But when I returned you were married to my best friend.”

2.      Cowboys hold dear family, friends and country above all. And especially make great daddies.

From Gambling On A Heart:

With the worst of the dirt off her and on the washcloth, Mandy awakened enough to help him remove the dress and slip a nightgown over her head. He took her hand and led her into the bathroom across the hall where he helped her Sara Walter Ellwood, Gambling On A Heart, contemporary western roamnce, romantic suspense, cowboy romance, Texas romance, brush her teeth, then attempted to untangle her snarled hair with a brush.

Giving up on the hair, he carried her back to her bed and tucked the blankets around her small body. She yawned and folded her hands over her chest. With her eyes closed, she murmured the age-old bedtime prayer recited by children everywhere. “Now I lay me down to sleep…”

He sat on the edge of her bed and smiled as she asked God to take care of every member of her family, including her pony and horse.

“And let Momma know I love her, and me and Daddy miss her.”

He prepared for the twist in his gut when she asked God to send her mother home soon.

“And finally, Baby Jesus, keep Miz Tracy and Bobby safe. Amen.” She opened her eyes and smiled lazily up at him.

He swallowed past the thickness in his throat.

“I thought I should stop asking God to send Momma back to us, since I know now she can’t come home. It might make her sad because she can’t. But I thought it would be nice to add Miz Tracy and Bobby to my list.”

His smile grew stiff. He remembered their conversion over the wedding dinner. The little wheels in Mandy’s head were working. She hadn’t included Tracy and Bobby into her prayer without considering possibilities Zack didn’t even want to think about.

“That’s nice. Bobby is your friend,” he said past the dry tongue sticking to the roof of his mouth.

She yawned and shrugged under the hideously pink bedspread. The ruffle must have tickled her chin, because she pushed it away. “I like Miz Tracy, too. She’s your friend, isn’t she?”

Tracy and him friends…fat chance. He hoped he never had to deal with her again. “I suppose.” He patted her covered chest. “Nighty-night, baby girl. I love you.”

“Nighty-night, Daddy.” She grinned at him. “I love you more.”

He leaned over her and kissed her forehead. “I love you ’til the cows come home,” he whispered, and into her arms placed the stuffed bunny Lisa had given to her when she was a baby.

“We aren’t missin’ any cows.” She giggled and hugged the raggedy stuffed animal. “So, none of ’em needs to come home.”

It was an old ritual. He chuckled and stood, giving her one last kiss on her forehead and feathered back her black hair. “Then I’ll have an even longer time to love you. Now go to sleep.”

She nodded, yawning again. He tucked the sheet and comforter around her. For several moments after he’d turned out the light, he stood by the door until her breathing evened into sleep.

3.      Cowboys will never, ever hurt an animal and will take them in when they can.

From A Hunter’s Blade (although considered a paranormal romance, Austin is a cowboy):

He opened the door and got out of the truck. All this moping gloom and doom wasn’t like him. Somehow, he had to shake these feelings or he’d go crazy.Cera duBois, paranormal romance, romantic suspense, vampires, werewolf, Sara Walter Ellwood

“Meow.”

The soft sound came from the direction of the wood stacked up against the side of the garage. Austin peered in that direction and furrowed his brow. He was miles away from any neighbors and the previous owners had long ago vacated the property. He shook his head, convinced he’d imagined the cry, and headed toward the stairs to the front porch.

“Meow.” This time the sound was closer, more insistent. Austin turned and spotted the black kitten bounding toward him through the snow. “Meow.”

He glanced at the sky. The uncomfortable tingling over his skin told him dawn was fast approaching. He had to get inside and down into the room he’d created in the basement before the sun came up over the eastern mountains.

“Meow.” The kitten hopped onto the step of the porch and looked up at Austin with hopeful olive eyes.

The cat couldn’t have been more than three months old and was a pitiful looking thing with its black fur snagged with burs and its backbone sticking out bladelike. Austin knelt and smiled at his desolate visitor. The kitten was black with a spot of white on its chest and front left paw. Austin’s heart went out to the little fellow. It looked as lost as he was. “Hello, there. Where did you come from?”

“Meow.”

Chuckling, he held out his hand. The kitten sniffed his fingers and looked up at him curiously. With one last glance at the purpling sky in the east, Austin stood and passed the kitten on the steps to the porch. “Well, c’mon. I have no idea what I’ll feed you, but…”

The kitten followed him into the house. It sat in front of the door and waited for Austin to make the next move.

4.      Cowboys are sexy.

From current WIP Gambling On A Dream (this has not yet been professionally edited):

Whistling softly between her teeth, Dawn slowed her F-150 to take in the view in front of her. “Sweet mercy, isn’t that the sexiest thing on two legs.”

Wyatt pushed his vintage Harley on the side of dusty country road, the action showing off his muscular shoulders and forearms below his rolled up sleeves. His blue shirttails fluttered on either side of him indicating his shirt was open. His dark blue jeans hugged his ass and legs like a good pair of Levis should. The late afternoon sun glowed through his chestnut hair setting the red in it on fire. A black helmet hung from the handlebar and a black leather jacket folded over the worn leather seat of the bike.

He glanced over his shoulder as she approached and slowed. She wasn’t ready for the lusty clenching in her lower belly at the memories of Wyatt driving her crazy when they’d made love.

She bit the inside of her lip and tightened her grip on the steering wheel as primal need raked through her.

A pair of Aviator sunglasses covered his eyes. She pulled the truck off the side of the road next to one of the CW Ranch pastures. Wyatt propped the bike on its kickstand and ambled to the driver’s side window. Dust covered his boots and the bottoms of his jeans as if he’d been walking a great distance. But then, out here where miles and miles could separate one ranch house from another and the only living thing around were cattle and horses, getting stranded and hoofing it for miles before a person came along wasn’t uncommon.

“Aren’t you a sight for a weary man?” Wyatt smiled as he lifted his sunglasses to the top of his head and revealed eyes as blue and as the endless sky above them.

5.      Cowboys protect those they love unconditionally, even if they take a while to admit that they are in love.

From Gambling On A Secret:

He looked down at the floor and clenched his fist. He hated not telling her the whole truth. “After the poisoning, the work has doubled. I won’t buy hay again, and getting it in from your fields takes both of us.”cowboy, contemporary western, romance, suspense

“Oh.” She sniffed and didn’t look at him. “Maybe I should just hire a general contractor to do the work. Leon has offered his company.”

At the mention of the name, he turned her to look at him. “No. Not Ferguson.” Despite her glare, he headed off her argument. “If you want to hire someone to come in and do the work, that’s fine. As long as it’s not Ferguson.”

Her expression remained defiant. “What if I want Leon’s company to do the work? I’ve seen some of the houses his company has built. They’re beautiful.”

“And shoddy.”

She shook her head and pushed his hands away. “Dear God, Dylan, I know you don’t like him, but it’s not like Leon himself will be driving the nails and painting my walls.”

“No, he wants you on your back and your deed in his name.” He stepped away with clenched fists. Heat crawled up his neck. “Maybe he’s already gotten you into bed, but I won’t let him take this land the way he swindled my grandfather out of his.” The moment the words were out, he regretted them.

“I can’t believe you! Do you have any idea how insulting that is?” Charli shot him through with blue-green fire. “Yes, Leon wants me, but I haven’t slept with him. I don’t want to!

And I can’t believe you still think he wants my land. Why? Why the hell would he want my ranch when he can buy whatever land he wants?”

“You can’t be this blind or naive. Think! You know everyone in town was shocked when you took the bid for this place out from under Leon. In all the years I’ve known him, he has never gone after a local woman, and then you show up and suddenly he’s all over you. Is being socially accepted by this town so damned important, you’d willingly fall for his act?”

The tears misting her eyes extinguished the fire. Damn, he didn’t mean to hurt her. “But why? Why does he want my ranch so badly?” She hugged herself again. Her face went pale, and she sat in the old chair in the corner by the door. Finally, he’d made her think.

He leaned his backside against the desk, facing her. “I wish I knew why. I only know Leon has wanted this place for almost as long as I’ve known him.”

He looked down at his crossed boots. “When we were kids, my family came to Oak Springs for Christmas. I was about seven, Leon was twelve or thirteen, I think. Anyway, we were fooling around like boys do, and we snuck over here. He wanted to check out those old derricks.

When we got to the bridge, Leon stopped the four-wheeler we were riding. I looked toward the house and saw old Jock standing on the front porch with one of his girlfriends and Johnny–Jock’s first son. He’s about the same age as Leon. And I figured they probably knew each other.”

He stared into the past as he spoke. “Jock looked up at us, and it was almost as if there was some silent exchange between him and Leon. After a moment, Leon looked at me with so much hatred in his eyes it scared me.”

As he submerged himself into the long ago scene from that mild winter day, he remembered the way Leon’s face turned hard at seeing Jock with his family. Something tripped in him. He looked up to find her watching him. “We were about halfway back to Oak Springs when he said to me, ‘I’ll own that ranch someday.’ I laughed and said something about Jock’s kid, and Leon looked at me and said, ‘His bastards don’t matter. Blackwell Ranch will rightfully be mine.’”

He paused, his mind buzzed with a hunch so outrageous he didn’t believe it himself. “I didn’t think anything about it until I’d heard about Leon firing three of his lawyers and his secretary when he discovered you beat him to the bid on this place. Then it slipped out he’d been trying for years to buy the ranch from Jock. Then Jock destroyed his will. The consensus at the time was he was just being a son-of-a-bitch by not giving it to his sons and letting it go to probate. Everyone chalked it up to his craziness. I’d say it’s because the last person Jock Blackwell wanted to have this place was Leon and that’s who would have bought it from the Blackwell boys.” He kneeled before her. “Suddenly those childish declarations didn’t seem so silly. Don’t trust him, Peaches.” He skimmed his fingers over her pale, damp, cheek. “I don’t want you to get hurt.”

I don’t want to be hurt if you turn to him.
